ASTRONAUTICA: Voices of Women in Space

Voices of the New launches the global premiere of ASTRONAUTICA: Voices of Women in Space Performed by TRIO TRIUMPHATRIX This newly commissioned work of music, voice, and video has a dynamically diverse score by nine women composers, and a libretto drawn from the words of sixteen women astronauts who have traveled in outer space and seen the world from a dramatic new perspective. Composed by 9 women composers: Libby Larsen Elaine Lachica Hai-Ting Chinn, Renee Favand-See, Jennifer Jolley Gilda Lyons RaShonda Reeves Kamala Sankaram Jane Sheldon and Bora Yoon. My work, 'SPACEWALK' is about the 1st all-female spacewalk, by Jessica Meir and Christina Koch (Oct 2019), integrating NASA’s electromagnetic recordings of our Sun and neighboring planets’ magnetic fields are used as the main harmonic tuning structure, and resonance in which the work is composed and performed by Trio Triumphatrix.  Field recordings from the 1st all-female spacewalk broadcast, and interviews with Jessica Meir and Christina Koch following the milestone. Together, the work resonate the spirit of adventure, exploration, and transcendence to other realms, with their modalities, eerie sonorities, and use of transformed objects (thunder tube, walkie-talkies, NASA thermal blanket, feedback).
